Je me pose - Settling in

I am now i my fourth day here in Varkala and the second day of the year. I was reaaly pleased to arrive here and be able to unpack completely my bag and settle in. I made a few fabric purchases to make the place more homely and limit flying insects to the outside. The new year celebrations, the anniversary of the birth or death of a local guru turned statewide saint was also a reason to bring pilgrims to this quiet'ish' beach front tourist destination. So the place was pretty crowded, but its now getting back to normal activity and the new year tourists started to pack and move on. I was lucky to find a bicycle in l first hours here, as the place where I was used to have breakfast and some other meals had one available for rent at a reasonable rate and in an ok'ish' state. Getting it repaired and improved will keep me happy and busy. I have only been twice to the beach, the first evening for sunset and the next morning for a sea and sun bathe, but the sun is fierce here and I nearly got burned. This is not part of my plans, I have two months here so no need to rush with the sun, so I am enjoying the shade away from the beach and will go gradually and at times when the rays are softer. I am pleased that my rhythm is just how I wanted it, getting to bed very early and waking before sunrise and the croaking of the crows. This gives me time to rise, cleanse and go through a long yoga session with the chant of the owls and the early birds. I am then ready for breakfast and a good day ahead. I have started daily massage searches and have not yet found the pearl but have experienced a few good movements. I have found the Kalari Martial art training centre, I now need to find out at what time the trainings take place so that I can give this practice a try. I am reading more than i have in the past and I am now more than half way through the 'sorcerer's apprentice' by Tahir Shah. Its the story of a UK born Indian guy that goes to India to learn about magic and become a magician. I am nearly finished with the essay on buddhism and romanced autobiography by Pankaj Mishra and have completed the tribute by A.G.Mohan to the father of modern yoga Khrishnamacharya (1888-1989), father of Desikachar, he inspired many major Yogis such as K.Pattabhi Jois and BKS Iyengar, as well as the mother of my current instructor in Paris Ms Beatrice Millerand. This reading was inspiring and gave me more insight into the details of the method of Yoga I have been taught this year. I will now start with a biography of Vivekananda another icon in India and who was an ambassador of the hindu culture in the late 19th century. I followed some private tuition in Calcutta in one of the centres that are named after him, s learning more about this person will with no doubt bring me more knowledge. A volunteer of the Amma, the hugging diva saint of Kerala, gave me a book about her, so I will probably start it, but will I finish it will be the interesting question. As there is no internet connection in my current accommodation, I am enjoying an internet free life and will therefore not be posting so often.

  1. my trainer, at the time, was trained herself by Yvonne Millerand - I have her book in Paris - so it is quite a coincidence that you are being trained by her daughter.
